Jack's Journal

So, I guess seeing someone die and letting them die really aren’t the same thing. Last night, we Drinkers of Aleph finally managed to track down the elusive Tom. I honestly didn’t think it would be so easy.

While Ryu and Dina sat outside, Mobius and I got in costume and in character. I’ve got to say, spending a night at Wallflowers was an interesting experiment in espionage. Also, in testing my poor kidneys and liver. Within 30 minutes of arrival, someone slipped Rohypnol into my drink. As we couldn’t risk alerting Tom to our presence, I had to spend hours fighting it off without resorting to my magics.

Gotta admit, it was kind of fun. Like having most of my inhibitions torn away to find out what was underneath. Dancing is a lot more fun when you’re too busy wondering which swirlies are real and which are hallucination to worry about whether anyone thinks you look like a fool.

Then he finally showed up. I have to admit, I wasn’t actually expecting my hunch to play out. I mean, Spider’s advice is never bad, but this time he was so dead-on it’s kind of scary. Anyway, watching Mobius trying not to barf with revulsion while playing up the snooty dominant dick-hunter was funny as hell. What wasn’t funny is when the Celemites showed up to end Tom’s life.

Just another reason for us to get more perceptive. If they’d been looking for us, Mobius and myself would now be dead. I doubt Dina would have let us die without her. I just hope Ryuhon would have had the sense to run and tell Man’s Mountain.

Having to let those nutjobs hack off Tom’s head just felt wrong somehow. We were within arm’s reach, and even though they likely would have wiped the floor with us, we could have saved him. Then again, saving him would have lead nowhere. Someone that far gone into evil is pretty much impossible to reform. The guy was courting the Abyss for fuck’s sake. So why can’t I get it out of my head?

I keep going over the situation, wondering if we could have done something differently to keep the Selemites out of this. Also, wondering what would have happened if we turned Tom over to my superiors in the Adamantine Arrow. Somehow I doubt he would have been any less dead.

Though now we’ll likely never know if he had helpers. Any other scelesti in the city no longer have to worry about us finding out about them through Tom.

Grim-kept-thoughts 2

Strange things happening lately. Definitely a moment of fate tonight.

Eron came by for a little while Jack and I were exploring the fates within the city. The Fates led us to two of the Selemite Order outside of a Free Council holding. I reported that almost immediately. It was rather disconcerting when Epimethius was the one who responded with the information of whom owned the building.

So, Eron now knows about us doing ‘spells’, but assumes them to be like he did when he was a practicing Shaman, before becoming a Bound One, and knows Jack to be a Shaman. I’m not so sure we have to keep things from Eron, I know there are some things we should, of course, but simple things, I’m not so sure it would be harmful. Then again, if he had the choice, he’d probably not want to know anyways. Kodex still hates it when he comes over.

I requested all the information the Free Council has on Tom so far, got a yes for that. Going to pour over that here shortly.

We found Tom at Suede’s, she was bound in the middle of the same circle Eron was found in. He had no imago for the ritual he was casting, as though he was just setting it up for someone or something else to finish for him. We interrupted the ritual of course. He turned into a mouse, Life Arcanum, and escaped. The Challengers of Heracles showed up and helped restore the Fallen World to its natural space. The creeping Abyss pushed back out of the world. That was scary…

I would much rather be the information guy in the background! Totally not up for all this in your face action so to say. I don’t mind helping, but I want to help in a way that I am most useful! I’ve felt a breakthrough recently! I thought I was focusing on empowering my Time Arcanum, but… I definitely feel more Supernal energy within myself instead. I understand on an elemental level, a lot more of each of my Arcana, so to say, but am not able to do more with them yet. Can do what I already can do at a much higher level though! Comes way easier! I have no idea how I did that! I’m going to refresh, and start over on my focus of Time though, perhaps this time, I’ll become a Disciple of Time, instead of a Disciple of Gnosis… does that work?

I need to go figure this out…

It was a dark and stormy night; shadows danced about the torches. They stood watch, ever vigilant, over the sleeping denizens of the castle below. Damn, that was a good movie. I’ll have to watch it again sometime! But on a brighter note! Apparently hitting level 85 on a mage makes you a Mage! Well, in my case, a Lunargent Thorne! A.K.A.: A pain in the ass? If you ever thought it was difficult just keeping your schedule straight and being on time for things as a college student, you’re right! And you’re life is sad! Because unlike me, you can’t do anything about it! HA! I only kid! Well, I really am only a kid! I’m barely 19! I can’t even drink yet, but I can Know, Compel, Unveil, Rule, Veil, and Shield Time and Fate! O.o; This is crazy sauce! And best yet! I can’t really tell anyone! Well, other Mages are alright to tell! But apparently some of them are also Nephandies (left hand path mages, evil!)! This is crazy! But so totally awesome!

I will become the greatest Librarian Ever! R.O.D. will have nothing on me (insert maniacal laughing here)!!!

I started off Awakening while playing WoW, ya… it was my first time playing it too. My friends finally convinced me to try it, and what do I get? Access to only the most powerful stuff in existence? WTF!?!? Luckily Gustov saw the event, and showed up to rescue me! And a rescue it was! Shit would have gone WRONG without his tutelage! He mentored me for a few months in the ways of being a true Mage. By the end of it, I was at least an apprentice in half the Arcanum! Not bad for a newbie, right?

Seems I’ve also gained a Familiar, I named him Kodex. He’s a really awesome Cat! Definitely amazing!

So, after finishing my training under Gustov, I was introduced to the other students of his Cabal. They placed us together as a Cabal ourselves, that we named the Drinkers of Aleph! Pretty spiffy name if you ask me! Jack, Dina, Mobius, and myself! We have a home that is our territory as a Cabal, with a Hallow, and what we have dubbed the Haven. So far, we all seem to get along rather well, and work together even better! I’ve taken up the role as the Cabal’s Librarian of course, and have made a GIANORMOUS Cabal Grimoire for us to use. I have filled the first 200 pages with amazing basic information that will forever more be useful! And always be able to be used to help give us a start on almost any project. Mobius helped find the right information to put in there as well. He also helped put in the first selection of Rotes to be recorded into it as well.

I had to retrieve an Artifact from a Sleeper as my task for joining the Free Council. It was pretty easy. Doesn’t even really warrant more reference than that. So I am now officially a member of the Free Council! HUZZAH!

Other than that, there’s been this guy named Tom. I’ve watched him do some strange things. Like purposefully leaving freshly dry cleaned jackets and a discarded path tool for the Adamantine Arrow to find. Well, we found it first, before I saw him put them there. (Hello, Acanthus! I can do things like that!) Well, Mobius and I have been working on figuring out Tom’s M.O., and piecing together the puzzle.

The other fun puzzle was the whole Eron thing. Dead boy not dead! He’s like a ‘familiar’ to a ghost, that brought him back. The refer to themselves as the Bound. They aren’t mages, so we can’t say too much about our side of things, even though he’s been rather open so to say. But he’s also not really a sleeper anymore, since he’s no longer under the Lie… its confusing. But eh, things happen.

I’ve been enjoying the Jade Buddha, Kathleen has been my waitress there, she’s a student of fashion. She doesn’t know anyone in the area, so I’m trying to be nice and friendly with her. Across the street though, there’s a guy named Christopher! He work’s in the occult shop there named the Dusty Tome. Picked up some really good finds in there so far! And definitely want to work on being his friend! So far, I know I amuse him, hooray for being an Apprentice of Mind! He’s studying for a degree in the metaphysical field. I’ll be heading down there again before the week is out. Gotta make a shopping list of books to pick up as I can. Not like I get a lot of money for the month, but eh, 700$ is more than nothing! The great thing is, I can totally do my homework while doing something else just fine now!

Kodex loves the pictures in the journal’s that the mentors gifted us. It was the starting point of our library (for the Cabal). I sanctified us as a Cabal through Fate itself. If anyone breaks the tenants of the Cabal, or basically betrays us, they will lose from their mind any and all knowledge of the Cabal and its members, and be forced to leave the area of the Cabal. We, as a whole, agreed upon the Cabal Charter and what all it depicted. Mobius helped put it into legalease [ sic ]!

Alright, I’ve been writing this while reading my homework assignment, which I just finished btw, so I think its time for a snack! HUZZAH! I’ll write more in my Grim-Kept-Thoughts, or GKT for short, later!

Next time call first...

Weds. night, late evening:

The Cabal went to investigate Eron’s burnt out apartment searching for clues trying to find a trail leading us to Tom. Eron WAS a person, but now has a spirit riding around IN him which grants him some very interesting abilities, most notably returning from the dead, resistance to physical trauma, and aggressive self-healing. He calls himself one of the “Bound”, but he refuses to speak of anything more as his death is a touchy subject for him. This has proven frustrating given he’s personally interacted with Tom and can’t give much information regarding his work.

From what I gather, Tom is just a self-serving prick with a fancy for young people. He generally doesn’t seem to do his own dirty work and he’s very aware the Arrows are on his tail. Hence the disaster we came across in Eron’s apartment.

The raids of Tom’s old hideouts pushed him into constructing a trap in Eron’s closet. A small, but terrifyingly effective, blood creature quilled with blades and knives had been put into place. It skinned Dina like a fish, though Jack did manage to patch her up for the time being. The creature was linked to a small diagram hidden under the carpet in the closet which one could imagine being a summoning/binding circle. I’m curious as to how he constructed such a thing, but that shall have to wait. For now, we’ve looked at several possessions Tom used to own such as clothes, a small brass mirror and a postcard taunting whomever found it. Luckily the connection he had to them was severed, but this is just another reminder of precautions to take in the future.

Now Ryuhon and I are trying to delve into the psyche of Tom and what our evidence can realistically support in regards to finding him and bringing him to justice. Thus far we’ve seem to hit on an interesting subject; the Hellfire Club. Whether or not this may help us is to be seen, but it may serve as a useful pet project for me in either case. Ryuhon has also mentioned a personal favorite concept of mine, Occam’s Razor. The simplest solution is to be preferred. However I hope he hasn’t glazed over the part, that is, the razor is a principle that suggests we should tend towards simpler theories until we can trade some simplicity for increased explanatory power…
